We all know how social media can be mentally draining and extremely toxic for our mental health. In this age of technological advancement, social media is not where it used to be. It is constantly evolving and little do we know, it can do more harm than good, that is, if we use it properly.

Nowadays, society tells you that you that have to do this/that to stay “in trend”; or you must accomplish certain milestones by a specific age; or being constantly reminded of the need to be productive; or the empty-handed activism; or the mass capitalism; or how the amount of followers and likes you have determines your self-worth; or the need to do X, Y and Z in order to be successful; or the secret formula to beat the ever-changing algorithm.

I have been personally feeling the negative effects of social media and I am sure many of you can reIate. I am now here to personally share some pieces of advice that may help you get out of this toxic cycle and change the way you think.

  1. Unfollowing any account that does not serve a purpose to you - ask yourself, “how does this person make me feel? Does the content they post give me any value or interest in what they do?” Or you can just mute them if you don’t wanna unfollow :)

  2. Take whatever anyone says online with a grain of salt. You are in charge of your own life.

  3. Limit your screen time consumption

  4. The amount of likes, views and followers means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

  5. You are not obligated to give your time to people who aren’t worth it

  6. You will NOT benefit from a follow back train

  7. The algorithm is ever-changing, so unless you want to spend the rest of your life focused on chasing something that always evolves… I wouldn’t

  8. Focus on yourself and mind your own damn business

  9. Everyone has different experiences and different circumstances- just because they did something a certain way doesn’t mean it will necessarily work for you

  10. Not everything has to be announced

  11. Don’t feel like you have to post everyday or even at all

  12. Don’t let anyone judge you for your decisions

  13. You are not obligated to follow in anyone’s “footsteps”

  14. Do what YOU want. Just because someone is doing that, doesn’t mean you have to as well

  15. Be authentically yourself

  16. Prioritize your mental health

  17. It’s okay to say no

  18. Unless that person is going to pay your bills, YOU DO YOU HONEY

  19. DON’T RELY ON SOCIAL MEDIA- it can be fun to use, but don't depend on it

  20. It ain't a competition, there's room for all of us

Let me know in the comments below if you have any more advice in regards to this topic, I would love to hear them!
